Assurant renters insurance: How to Calculate Your Renters Insurance Coverage
Confused about how much apartment insurance you really need? Here, Assurant Renters Insurance break down the basics of how to determine coverage.
Many people often think of their belongings as just their furniture, appliances and electronics — big-ticket items that are costly to replace. But what about your dishes and silverware? Your clothes and shoes? Your well-coordinated and nicely organized office supplies? The little things add up and should be considered, too.
1. Start by documenting the large expensive items you have.
2. Then, room by room, evaluate the smaller things.
3. Try to create an estimate for how much it would be to replace every item in every room.
4. Have children or adding a roommate to your policy? Be sure to include their belongings in your estimate as well.
Understand the limits of your policy.
While your couch may be covered, your grandfather’s timeless watch may not be. Oftentimes, things like jewelry, watches, firearms and electronics are only covered up to a set amount. If you have something worth a couple thousand (like an engagement ring), you’ll want to subtract that from the overall coverage amount you’re selecting. Instead, you’ll add protection for these specific items later on.
Keep in mind the difference between replacement cost and actual cash value.
We keep things really simple. All of our policies include replacement cost, which means you’ll get cold hard cash for what it actually costs you to replace your belongings.
But if you like to do math, keep an eye out for policies that use “Actual Cash Value” to determine the worth of your things. ACV looks at the value of your items as they are today. So if you spent $500 on an espresso machine three years ago, you’ll only get the depreciated value of that machine. Consider lowering your coverage amount if you’re looking at a policy with ACV.
Choose your deductible carefully.
Your deductible is what we’ll subtract from your cash payout — not something you have to pay upfront. So if you have a table that’s worth $800 and choose a $250 deductible, we’ll give you $550 back. A higher deductible will lower your monthly payment, but also means you’ll receive less for a covered loss.
Add additional protection
Earlier, they talked about adding coverage for specific items, like your engagement ring. In the insurance world, we call this “scheduling personal property.” So how do you do that? There are just a couple of extra steps you’ll need to complete.
GET AN APPRAISAL
Make sure it has the name of the appraisal company and the business address, phone number and signature of the appraiser. Include any certificates of authenticity you used while getting the appraisal. (This is more typical for jewelry.)
SNAP A PIC!
Place your items next to something with a date on it, like a newspaper or magazine or receipt.

General Policy Assurant renters insurance
Assurant renters insurance questions and answers.
Can I get a policy for less than a year? How about more than a year?
Right now we only offer yearlong policies. But if your lease is shorter than a year, just make sure you set a reminder to cancel (we won’t charge you any penalties or fees). Have a longer lease? We automatically renew your policy each year so you don’t have to worry.
Can I buy a policy even if my lease hasn’t started?
Absolutely! You can choose your coverage start date when you go to buy a policy.
Can I make changes to my policy after I buy? Like adding a roommate, an upgrade or changing my coverage amount?
With a Renters Insurance policy, you’re in control. You can make changes like this at MyAssurantPolicy.com and you should be all set.
I’m subleasing an apartment. Can I still get renters insurance?
You absolutely can. Just set a reminder to cancel once your sublease is up, since we only offer yearlong policies (you won’t be charged any fees to do so).
When and how will I receive my policy documents? And what if I need another copy?
Depending on what you chose when you bought a policy, we’ll either email you your documents within 2 business days or you’ll see them in your mailbox within 3 to 5 business days. You can also get a copy of your policy or proof of coverage at MyAssurantPolicy.com.
Do I need to list my spouse/partner/children on my policy to cover their belongings?
A Renters Insurance policy automatically covers your belongings and those of family living with you — free of charge! And you can add a roommate to your policy at no extra cost to cover their stuff, too. Just write their name down at checkout.
How do I file a claim?
Right here.
Where can I find my proof of coverage?
If you have a copy of your policy, look for a Declaration page. Or you can log in at MyAssurantPolicy.com to get proof of coverage. (Psst, if you’re in one of our partner communities or added an Interested Party at checkout, we’ve sent proof to your landlord/property company. See if you’re in our partner community by typing in your address here. A note will pop up if you are.)
Can I buy a Renters Insurance policy if I own my home?
If you’re a homeowner or mobile home owner, you won’t be eligible for Renters Insurance. But if you switch to something like renting a fancy loft downtown (or anything else), we’ll be there to cover you!
Will my policy cover my home if I use it as an Airbnb? Or can I get renters insurance for an Airbnb that I’m staying at?
Unfortunately, if you use your home as an Airbnb, it counts as a business instead of a home, so your insurance policy won’t cover any damages caused by Airbnb guests.
We currently don’t offer a temporary insurance plan if you’re staying at an Airbnb for a couple of nights. However, if you rent an Airbnb and that Airbnb becomes your long-term residence, you can get a Renters Insurance policy.
What do I do if I don’t have a U.S. phone number?
If you’re an international customer that doesn’t yet have a U.S. phone number, please use the phone number of your apartment complex/leasing office/property management company. But don’t forget to update your number by visiting MyAssurantPolicy.com as soon as you have one!
